Gender-Based Violence Update

Our analysis of selected categories of gender-based violence found that whereas declines were recorded for murder and sexual violence in the major crimes category (rape and unlawful sexual intercourse), an increase was recorded for domestic violence cases for which police made an arrest or placed the matter under investigation.

Note: Not all domestic violence reports result in cases being lodged. There are several cases for which complainants decline to take court action.


MORE ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE REPORTS

There was a 5% decline in the number of domestic violence reports documented by the Belize Police Department for the period January to August 2021 relative to the same period in 2020. Reports declined from 1,703 to 1,618. However, there was a 7% increase in the number of cases lodged, from 486 during January to August 2020 to 522 during January to August 2021.
